Good grief I'm sore

And not from exercise, unfortunately. No, I had my wisdom teeth taken out yesterday and the past two days have not been fun. I can handle pain, I can handle anesthesia, I can even handle most dental work. But I cannot handle this idea of healing open wounds in my mouth! BLECH!

Even worse is I'm scared to brush my teeth today since some of the sites still haven't stopped bleeding...grr. It's my own fault though. I've needed to have them out for 12 years or so, even went so far as having three consultations, but I never went through with it. Then a few weeks ago my jaw hurt so bad I could hardly talk for a couple of days and I got fed up and made the appointment.

Thankfully my husband is a wonderful nurse (though I'm also a great patient, once the anesthesia wears off) and took care of me and Whit by himself yesterday. And now he has more stories of me being loopy and saying crazy things. But I'm glad I'm not the only one! The nurse at the office took me out the back door and said they have the separate exit for patients waking up from anesthesia, because they don't know what we'll say and don't want to freak out the other patients!

The worst part of being down from this is I have so much to do, and I'm not a patient person when it comes to healing. Or eating apparently. I miss solid foods sooo much!

Happy Five Months!

This kid is starting to get too big to take pictures!
At five months, Whit...

...just moved up to size 4 diapers. (And thank you Target for now having Pampers Swaddlers in size 4 and 5!)

...has two front teeth! And teething hasn't been too bad.

...weighs about 18 lbs. (At the four month appointment he weighed 17lbs. 1 oz. and was almost 26" long)

...now does a little dance we like to call the "Whitman Wiggle". When he's on his back he'll shake his head back and forth while flailing his arms and legs and just smiiiile.

...survived his first multi-family, multi-state Christmas. And didn't get overwhelmed... even in my Grandma's 80+ degree house with LOTS of cousins running around and talking loudly until late. Even had a great time during the whole thing. And helped open a few of his presents, of which there were plenty!

...has finally rolled over from back to belly. And recently discovered he can roll to things he wants. I think we may have just skipped crawling and went for rolling instead.

...is also a big fan of scooting on his back. When he first started, he wouldn't go to sleep at night because he wanted to practice! Ben and I stayed up rather late catching up on Castle and watching Whit scoot across the room for a few laps.

...has tried cereal and he likes it! Honestly, I think he just likes eating like a big boy. He stares at me and Ben when we eat, so I think he feels more like us when he eats in his high chair.

...can *almost* sit up by himself. When he sits on our bed he can occasionally keep his balance, but he finds it funny when he topples over.

...recognizes his name... I think. A couple of times he's looked at me when I say his name, but I'm not sure if it was just a coincidence yet.

...is enamored with his Papa. And I think even more so now that we didn't see him much last month. Ben had Whit most of the day on one of his off days and the child refused to nap because they were having too much fun.

...is becoming a champion napper!

...loves his activity-saucer-thingy, his mobile (I've never mentioned this before, but he LOVES his mobile), when I make his toys talk to him, his crunchy book, when I pretend to drop him, mirrors!, ceiling fans (still), and all the weird noises we can make at him.

...loves the furry family members. He's now pet all of them at least twice and giggles at the dogs when they play or sniff his ears.

...has a cute habit of sneezing a couple of times and then saying "ahhhh" afterwards!

To those of us who struggle to keep a clean house with a baby...

Song For a Fith Child, by Ruth Hamilton. 1958
Mother, oh Mother, come shake out your cloth
empty the dustpan, poison the moth,
hang out the washing and butter the bread,
sew on a button and make up a bed.
Where is the mother whose house is so shocking?
She’s up in the nursery, blissfully rocking.
Oh, I’ve grown shiftless as Little Boy Blue
(lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo).
Dishes are waiting and bills are past due
(pat-a-cake, darling, and peek, peekaboo).
The shopping’s not done and there’s nothing for stew
and out in the yard there’s a hullabaloo
but I’m playing Kanga and this is my Roo.
Look! Aren’t her eyes the most wonderful hue?
(lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo).
The cleaning and scrubbing will wait till tomorrow,
for children grow up, as I’ve learned to my sorrow.
So quiet down, cobwebs. Dust go to sleep.
I’m rocking my baby and babies don’t keep.

First tooth!

And just to remind us how quickly children grow, he already cut his second tooth... six hours after I took this picture!

Minor victory today

My mother in law and I went to an outlet mall that's about an hour outside of Nashville to check out the Gap and Carter's outlet. Btw, waaaaay cute stuff at the Carter's store, but Whit has too many clothes already so I bought some things for my upcoming nephew. Anyhoo, after looking through the tiny baby section we started looking for ourselves and BAM!

Uhhh yeah that's me in regular sized clothing and I don't want to kill myself over my muffin top... that you can't see! I am so stoked that I'm finally starting to feel normal-sized again. I'm a long way off from my pre-pregnancy body, but wearing real jeans is definitely a step in the right direction.

Woohoo!

Christmas...check. Baby shower #1...

Glad to see I'm not the only blogger that has been way too busy lately to post anything! I checked my Google Reader tonight and only saw a handful of Christmas posts. So I thought I would share how our first little Christmas as our new little family went.

Whit watching his Laugh and Learn Dance and Play Puppy...where do they get these awful names?!

Looking through Whitman's stocking.

Every year Santa visits the animals too. Usually all Ceti wants is a can of tuna and the tissue paper.

Foster aka Jealous aka Eeyore

The aftermath
The aftermath pt. 2
Watching the "yule log" burn while Whit took a nap.
The boys trying out Ben's Christmas present.

And me attempting it. Didn't know Ben took this!

The giant stocking at Ben's mother's house.

I sooo need to learn Photoshop to take that drool mark out. Otherwise this could be a Christmas card!

Commence planking!

And now to start prepping for baby shower #1 for my sister. The first one is going to be a "Mommy's Little Man" theme and I'm sooooo excited for all the things I've got planned. Now just to find the time to make it all. So far this is the diaper cake I made:

Not bad for my first one, right?

Whit's latest achievement...mobility!

We had a great Christmas and I hope everyone else did too!

Santa was very good to us, not that our little guy noticed. He's learned something new: scooting.

Just ignore that post-present-opening mess and you'll see... We had put him on his activity mat and he managed to scoot all over the living room rug. Silly boy!

We would put him back and he'd start all over again. He did about three laps at our house and three more at the in-laws. He's obsessed with scooting! The past three nights he's had trouble sleeping because he wants so badly to practice his new skill. So we just put him on the floor and let him go, occasionally turning him around so he doesn't hit his head on the hardwoods.

Maybe after he's mastered this he'll care about his presents!
